Thirteen-time league champions AFC Leopards have acquired the services of international midfielder Kevin Kimani hours to the end of the December-January transfer period.
The diminutive Kimani, a deadline day capture for Ingwe, has agreed to a one year contract with a clause that allows him to leave if he gets a good offer outside the Kenyan Premier League.
“Kimani will be with us for the duration of this season. The deal is through and is above board, and we look forward to seeing him in Ingwe colours,” said AFC Leopards club chairman Dan Mule.
Kimani, the 2011 Kenyan Premier League Player of the Year, becomes the 14 player to be signed by Ingwe in the current transfer period. Others include Duncan Otieno (from Posta Rangers), Robinson Kamura (Mathare United), Whyvonne Isuza (Mathare United), Salim Abdallah (Posta Rangers), Samwel Ndung’u (Muhoroni Youth), Dennis Sikhayi (Western Stima), Gabriel Andika (Western Stima), Marcus Abwao (Nairobi Stima), Michael Kibwage Wanyika (Kakamega Homeboyz) and Ibrahim Mao (Sofapaka).
Kimani returns to the local league after in ignominious seven months with South Africa’s Premier League Soccer club Jomo Cosmos, where he was never fielded in any match.
His last competitive match was in June 2016 with Tusker, who went on to win the top flight league.
This is the second time the former Mathare United player is returning to the local league, the first was in 2014 when he joined Tusker from Belgian club Bocholter VV. He had left the local league after a very successful outing with Mathare in 2011 where he won the KPL Player of the Year Award, but struggled to get a club in Europe the entire 2012 season before setting at Belgium’s Bocholter VV towards the end of the year. The nine are Brian Omondi, who was on loan to Agro Chemicals, defenders Marlon Tangauzi ( from Uganda Saints FC) Vincent Omumbo (Thika United), former Chemelil Sugar captain Samuel Olwande, midfielders Sydney Ochieng (Palos FC), Moses Ndawula (Lweza FC, Uganda), Abdul Hillary (African Lyon, Tanzania), Evans Ochieng (Umeme FC) and Victor Ndinya (Bandari).
Tusker also announced the departure of goalkeeper Martin Musalia and veteran utility player Osborne Monday who moved to Posta Rangers and Kariobangi Sharks respectively.
Internationally capped Brian Osumba has returned after a season out due to injury.
The technical bench is headed by 50-year old Ugandan George Nsimbe, assisted by former Chemelil Sugar coach Francis Baraza. Kagai Azande, formerly with Mathare United, has been appointed goalkeeping coach.
In an interview with kpl.co.ke, Nsimbe said he was delighted with the new signings and their preseason preparations.
“The new signings are fitting in well and we are focusing on establishing cohesion among the players. It will be a tough season, but I believe the side has what it takes to make it to the group stages of the CAF Champions League and to defend the league title,” he said.
Tusker have played build up matches in their preseason training against with Palos FC of Kisumu, Muhoroni Youth, Vihiga United and Bul FC of Uganda.
