PRESS STATEMENT: CHANGE OF GOR MAHIA FC vs AFC LEOPARDS SC MATCH VENUE

The 2017 SportPesa Premier League season 2nd leg Nairobi Derby meeting between Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards SC has reverted to its original venue, the Nyayo National Stadium.

The match will be played on Sunday, 27 August 2017, kick off 3:00 PM.

This follows a successful meeting held on Tuesday, 22 August 2017 between Gor Mahia FC officials and the management of the Nyayo National Stadium. Gor Mahia FC and the management of the Nyayo National Stadium have agreed to host the match and also deliberated over the security arrangements for the match.

We had earlier received communication from Nyayo that their facility will not be available as it will be closed to allow for its renovation in preparation for hosting matches during the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN), we regret and apologise for the inconvenience this latest development has caused to all stakeholders who were making preparations based on the Nairobi Derby being played at Kasarani.

However, we wish to reiterate that this is not a reason of our own making as we had made a reservation on Friday, 07 July 2017, to have the Derby played at Nyayo and this latest change of venue has been prompted by Kasarani’s hesitation to make their facility available for the match to be hosted there because the stadium is being prepared for the swearing-in ceremony of the Presiden-elect.

We thank the management of the Nyayo National Stadium for making their facility available albeit in very difficult circumstances.

There will be a pre-event meeting which will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium on Thursday, 24 August 2017 at 10:00 AM during which security arrangements for the Derby will be discussed.

The media is welcomed to cover the meeting.

More details on the hosting arrangements for the Derby will be communicated after Thursday’s pre-event meeting.
