Kakamega Homeboyz, Bandari FC and Mathare United registered wins over Thika United, Sofapaka and Vihiga United respectively as the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Round One matches came to an end on Sunday 4th February.

Thika United 0-1 Kakamega Homeboyz

Allan Wanga marked his Kakamega Homeboyz debut with a fine goal as the team beat Thika United by a solitary goal in an entertaining match played at the Thika Sub County Stadium.

The visitors started on a high note as the home team struggled to settle in the earlier proceedings. Wanga controlled a long pass just outside the box and unleashed a powerful shot that went past a fully stretched Thika United custodian Eliud Emase.

Thika immediately upped their tempo and got a wonderful chance to equalize in the 24th minute, winning a freekick just outside the box but Shami Kibwana deflected off the wall for a fruitless corner. Few minutes later captain Dennis Odhiambo also blasted wide from the same position as the team continued to push for an equalizer.

Moses Mudavadi was stretchered off injured off for Homeboyz in the 40th minute, Festo Omukoto coming in for him. Wanga could have doubled the lead just before the breather but his hard shot off a Noah Wafula cross went just inches wide.

Second half

Thika pulled out the impressive Benson Iregi for new signing Davis Agesa and Masakidi Mata coming out for Chibueze Longinnus as they continued to press for an equalizer while Homeboyz pulled out Wanga for former Muhoroni Youth striker Hassan Kikoyo. Dennis Odhiambo missed a clear chance in the 83rd minute, blasting wide from inside the box after a good pass from the hardworking Agesa. Homeboyz custodian also did well to deny Agesa from inside the box as Thika continued to dominate the second half. Chibueze’s shot from inside the line was cleared off the line towards the end of the match as Homeboyz held on to bag the crucial three points.

Sofapaka 0-3 Bandari

Anthony Wambani grabbed a brace with David Kingatua scoring one goal as Bandari registered the biggest win of the day against an off-colour Sofapaka at the Narok Stadium.

Vihiga 1-2 Mathare United

Clifford Alwanga grabbed a brace on his competitive Mathare United debut as the team came from behind to beat Vihiga United in a match played at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
